Moving from one location to another can be a time-consuming and tiresome task, especially if there are a large number of heavy items involved. Removals can be quite risky because it’s easy to injure yourself or damage the items if you don’t use the right moving techniques. A professional removalist has the training and experience and knows how to transport items of all shapes, sizes, and weights carefully. At Infinite Removals, we recommend hiring a professional to all our clients but if you intend to move the items on your own, here are some tips that can help:

  1. Use heavy duty blankets

It’s difficult to control movements and balance a heavy object well while you’re lugging it around. Wrapping it up in a heavy and thick blanket won’t just provide proper grip, but will also protect the item inside from damage. The thick blanket provides an adequate cushion against impact and that reduces the chances of damage or breakage if the item happens to slip out of your grip.

  1. Position your grip

Heavy items are difficult to lift even if you have a solid hold on them, but they’re almost impossible to lift if you don’t find a good grip. Consider the item carefully and determine where you can place your hands and dig your fingers into that spot. A blanket will help if you’re moving heavy and flat wooden furniture as it will provide a good hold and ensure your fingers don’t slip off the polished surface.

  1. Ramp for areas with stairs

It’s much easier to use a ramp to transport furniture items than it is to navigate the stairs. You can slide the heavy items carefully down the ramp and won’t have to keep looking at your feet to ensure you don’t fall. A ramp will provide an even flat surface and isn’t as risky as walking down the stairs while carrying a heavy object.

  1. Use straps to secure items

Heavy items are more likely to move around and fall during transportation and are likely to slip out of your grip during the loading process. The best way to avoid this problem is to secure all items with straps. You can also use straps to secure these heavy items to furniture moving trolleys.

  1. Have enough manpower

Moving heavy items isn’t a one man’s job; so ask your friends or family to help you. Large furniture pieces like a sofa need at least two people and other pieces might need more. Try to find at least 3 to 4 people to help you move the heavy items.

Even with the right precautions and help, moving heavy objects can be incredibly risky. Most people do it because they want to save money and believe they can handle the job. In truth, the cost of damage caused by amateur removal techniques, and the repairs usually exceeds the cost of hiring removalists.
